How China lends: A rare look into 100 debt contracts with foreign governments
China’s foreign lending policy has been making the news time and again, sparking speculation about the underlying terms and conditions – for instance with regard to all the financing provided by China for its Belt and Road Initiative. After all, these projects are predominately credit-based and driven by Chinese loans. On June 9, 2021, Professor Christoph Trebesch (Kiel Institute for the World Economy) will share his insights with a presentation of his co-authored study on “How China lends: A rare look into 100 debt contracts with foreign governments” (joint with Anna Gelpern, Sebastian Horn, Scott Morris, Brad Parks). His lecture will be followed by a contribution from the discussant Stephan Barisitz, Senior Economist at the OeNB’s Foreign Research Division. The web talk will be chaired by Doris Ritzberger-Grünwald, Director of the OeNB’s Economic Analysis and Research Department. After the presentation, the speakers will be available for a Q&A session.
