The central bank of the future
(, Vienna)OeNB and SUERF to host joint Economics Conference in Vienna
Central banks are dealing with major changes and challenges that are affecting all their business areas. For this reason, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and SUERF (The European Money and Finance Forum) are dedicating their upcoming Economics Conference to: “The central bank of the future: opportunities and challenges.” The conference will take place on June 10 and 11 in Vienna, Austria.
Central banks are facing formidable challenges. Their various business areas are undergoing fundamental structural changes. How should monetary policy strategies and communication adapt in the light of the recent unanticipated surge – and subsequent fall – of inflation and heightened uncertainty? What does the inflation spike mean for prices and wage-setting? How will monetary impulses transmit to the economy, given structural changes, notably digital transformation and AI?
These are only some of the questions that will be addressed at this year’s OeNBSUERF Economics Conference in Vienna. OeNB Governor Robert Holzmann and SUERF President Donato Masciandaro are looking forward to welcoming top international speakers, including Rosa Lastra (Queen Mary University of London), Athanasios Orphanides (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and François Villeroy de Galhau (Banque de France).
The conference will offer both dedicated policy and academic sessions that will look into various pressing questions. After all, central banks must refine their policy toolkit in the aftermath of the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. They need to address the implications of central bank digital currencies and embrace AI. They also need to respond to geopolitical uncertainties, climate change and energy transition while maintaining independence and accountability.
Over two days, these issues will be explored by leading experts, among them Sarah Bell (Bank for International Settlements), Michal Horváth (Národná banka Slovenska) and Frank Smets (ECB, SUERF Fellow) – as well as many other key players in monetary policy and economic research. The OeNB|SUERF Economics Conference can be attended online or in person on the OeNB’s premises in Vienna.
Economics Conference
The OeNB’s Economics Conference has a long-standing tradition of bringing together renowned experts in economics, central banking and supervision. In recent years, Austria’s central bank – the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) – has organized the annual Economics Conference in cooperation with SUERF. SUERF – The European Money and Finance Forum is an independent, non-profit network association of central banks, supervisors, financial institutions, academic institutions and financial sector practitioners.
