“MONEY”
It is hard to imagine everyday life without money. We use it to pay, save and determine the value of goods and services. Money, obviously, concerns all of us.
But what is money anyway? Today, banknotes and coins are still a popular instrument of payment. However, in the long history of money, they have been only one means to make payments among many others.
In the Money Museum’s permanent exhibition "Money,” you will discover why cocoa beans were once weighed in silver, and why a tulip bulb could make a difference between “rich” and “poor.” Over 250 objects bring the multifaceted history of money to life.
Moreover, the exhibition highlights the broad range of tasks and responsibilities of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), which have changed many times since the bank was founded more than 200 years ago, while its guiding principles have remained the same: stability and security.
