The common side

The common sides show variations of the map of Europe. This motif is complemented by the numeral representing the value of the coin and six lines that cut across the face running toward stars on both ends. The design was created by Belgian designer Luc Luycx. After the enlargement of the EU in 2004 and 2007, the designs were adjusted.

1, 2 and 5 cent

The design of the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins symbolizes Europe’s place in the world.

For the visually impaired:

  1. Coin values are prominently displayed on the common European side in raised relief.
  2. The coins are clearly distinguishable based on their size.
  3. Different edges make it easier to tell the difference between the individual coins.

10, 20 and 50 cent

The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins that were issued from 1999 to 2007 show the European Union as a group of individual states. The coins issued after 2007 feature a geographical image of Europe.

Special features:

  1. The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins are made from a unique alloy (Nordic gold), which is difficult to melt and used exclusively for coins.
