"CESEE in the COVID-19 crisis – the role of the EU and global spillovers"

The Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and Bruegel join forces for the OeNB’s Conference on European Economic Integration (CEEI) on November 5 and 6, 2020

The considerable economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that no economy is immune to regional or international spillovers. The economies of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe (CESEE) are no exception, not least because of their deep global integration. But how can the CESEE region become more resilient to such painful shocks, expand its policy space and benefit from EU integration effects to support recovery?

Looking into the impact of this unprecedented crisis, the Conference on European Economic Integration (CEEI) 2020 sets out to provide answers to these and other pressing questions, addressing the topic of “CESEE in the COVID-19 crisis – the role of the EU and global spillovers.” Due to the renewed accelerated spread of the pandemic in many places, this year’s CEEI will be held as a virtual event, in cooperation with Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, on November 5 and 6, 2020.

Hosted by OeNB Governor Robert Holzmann, the CEEI 2020 will bring together a number of high-ranking CESEE central bank representatives for thought-provoking discussions, e.g. Governor Anita Angelovska Bezhoska (National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia), Deputy Governor Leonardo Badea (National Bank of Romania), Governor Madis Müller (Bank of Estonia) and Governor Boris Vujčić (Croatian National Bank). Marcel Fratzscher (President, German Institute for Economic Research – DIW Berlin) and Linda Goldberg (Senior Vice President, Federal Reserve Bank of New York) will deliver keynote lectures. The CEEI will conclude with a high-level panel discussion, to which Adam Tooze (Professor, Columbia University) will contribute.
